I am a founding member of ACCA and a member of the Board. The impetus to form the Association came from a conviction within a group of us that there was a need for an organisation that could endeavour to preserve and promote the culture of Calabria and enable us to connect to and celebrate our heritage.
I was born in Calabria but raised in Melbourne. Like most Calabrian’s, I enjoy the traditional cuisine, however, I believe that there is more to the culture than capocollo, melenzane, nduja, cannoli, olives or red wine. I believe that even in a ‘post traditional’ world, tradition should be given the opportunity to survive and flourish for those that seek to draw on it.
My vision is to enable our children and grandchildren to learn about our culture [beyond food and wine] and instill in them pride in their Calabrese heritage. Hopefully, the association will help in achieving that goal and help to dispel the false and negative stereotype of the Calabrese in Australia and promote the contribution that the Calabrese and other Italians have made to the progress of Australia.
