This was an enlightening discussion led by Professor Anna Sergi on the complexities of the ‘Ndrangheta mafia, its impact on Calabrian Australians, and how stereotypes shape identity. Her research explored the intergenerational trauma and cultural ambiguity faced by the diaspora.
Vincent Morfuni KC passionately challenged negative media portrayals of Calabrian’s, highlighting how historical immigration policies and misleading narratives have fuelled stigma. He also shared how ACCA took action against false claims made by the AFP, leading to an important meeting where the AFP agreed to reconsider their statements and acknowledged the majority of Calabrian’s are law-abiding citizens. A powerful evening of dialogue, awareness, and advocacy for cultural understanding!
