Professor Elisabetta Barberio

Professor Elisabetta Barberio is the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Dark Matter Particle Physics. She initiated the direct detection dark matter program in Australia. Professor Barberio led the construction of the first underground laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere, the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, which will host the first Australian dark matter detection experiment in Australia.
Before joining the Experimental Particle Physics Group at The University of Melbourne, Professor Barberio had an important role in the discovery of the Higgs boson particle at the Large Hadron Collider.  As a researcher at CERN, the European laboratory of particle physics, she performed measurements on B-physics and electroweak physics.

In June 2024, Professor Barberio was awarded the Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. She received this honour for her prestigious international career and her outstanding contribution to the study of dark matter particle physics, for promoting scientific collaboration between Italy and Australia, and for her role in supporting female participation in STEM.
